A recent report reveals that 2024 is set to become the year with the highest number of politically motivated attacks in Mexico, with alarming statistics already registered. With months to go, predictions suggest surpassing previous records of violence against politicians post-elections.

The civil organization Data Cívica has presented an update of its report 'Voting Among Bullets' with data from October, indicating that 2024 could become the year with the most registered politically motivated attacks. Since they have records, 2023 was the year with the most assaults against political figures, with a total of 570 events. However, with data from October, 2024 already totals 568 such incidents, nearing the historic high. According to the report, post-electoral violence persists after the elections on June 2. Tragic examples include the murder of the mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, as well as two other elected councilors in Guerrero. In the same state, Salvador Villalba, elected mayor of Copala, and Enrique Rodríguez Cayetano, elected mayor of San Felipe Xochiltepec in Puebla, were also murdered in June and September respectively, raising the number of mayors killed in the year to six, half after the June elections. During the term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), 32 mayors have died at the hands of organized crime, with Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Guerrero being the most dangerous states. Of the total 568 events recorded in 2024, including murders, attempted homicides, kidnappings, and threats, Guerrero, Chiapas, and Puebla lead the list with 70, 63, and 54 events respectively. In October, 41 events of political-criminal violence were reported in Mexico, with three cases related to women and 36 to men.
